The Science of High-Pitched Tones
Why can younger people hear high pitches better?
Presbycusis (Age Hearing Loss)
Inside your inner ear (cochlea) are thousands of tiny hair cells called cilia. Hair cells that detect ultra-high frequencies are located right near the entrance of the ear organ. Over time and continuous noise exposure, these delicate cells naturally degrade and do not regenerate.
The "Mosquito" Story
In the mid-2000s, a device called "The Mosquito" was created to play a ~17 kHz tone to deter loitering. Teenagers quickly flipped the trick into a famous smartphone ringtone—so their phones could ring in class without adult teachers hearing a thing!
Hearing Protection
Human hearing normally spans from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Protecting your ears from extreme loudness (concerts, earphones at 100% volume) helps preserve your high-frequency cilia so you can hear higher pitches for longer in life.
